Pick One

I had an idea for birthday gift giving, a way to liven the streamlined process up. Why not bring two gifts to someone and tell them to pick one? Then, take the unopened present back with you without telling them what it is. I decided I needed a few guidelines. The gifts need to both be about the same value and both should be tailored to fit the person receiving the gift. That way a reasonable argument can be made that there is no better choice. My problem was that both gifts I bought were not the same size or weight. I ended up putting them both in handmade cardboard boxes and I used plastic bags to eliminate the free space inside. When they were all ready to go, I immediately thought of Christo's fascination with unknown objects that are under wrappings. The desire to uncover presents, even if told what they are, is very strong in many people.

My friend Stephanie had the glorious opportunity to be the first to choose her birthday present. V for Vendetta (the graphic novel) was in one box and a fancy guitar capo was in the other. She was reluctant to participate, so she bequeathed the decision to David. David grabbed the heavier of the two, the graphic novel. Stephanie was very happy with her present. It remains to be seen if this had any impact at all, besides being a minor diversion. Perhaps it has the potential to make a otherwise boring birthday into a small checkpoint of memory that can be called upon at will in the future.
